DJ's Diner
Rock Barn Rd., Conover
6/7/99: I found out about DJ's Diner due to my interest in Dale Jarrett as a premier stock car driver on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit [currently in 1st position at this writing on 6/5/1999].

Located at Exit 133 off I-40, this Starlite Diner is owned by Dale and is just right down the road from his Busch shop, Jarrett-Favre Motorsports, Inc. It's the usual Starlite Diner decor on the outside but inside it's decorated with many photos of Dale throughout his racing career. I'd never heard of the Starlite chain until going there to eat, but have since become aware that it is a chain, although I have not visited any others. My husband or friends and I often drive the 3+ hours from our home in Princeton, West virginia to go there to eat, then tour the area in relation to stock car racing. I've had burgers, meat loaf sandwiches and always some good and gooey dessert made with the Hershey Ice Cream they sell there. The staff has always be nice and informative about Dale, the shop and the area and I've heard that Dale often dines there but I've not been lucky enough to catch him there yet! It's a must for stock car racing fans and especially DJ fans to take in! -- Review by Kathy Lambert

Mel's Diner
Route 158, Grandy
11/15/97: My husband, two friends and I visited this Starlite Diner during a recent vacation to the Outeranks. We got there shortly before closing time (okay, so they're not open 24 hours, I'm not going to hold THAT against them!). The staff was very friendly and the food was great, but what will go down in my memory came after we were served our food. As I said, we had gotten there close to closing time, so by the time we got our food, they were officially "closed". However, they didn't rush us. Then, the cranked up the jukebox and everybody started to dance!! We were having so much fun we didn't want to leave and I almost considered grabbing a broom myself so that nobody would notice that I didn't work there and let me stay!!

A really wonderful place eat, although their hours are a little odd. When we were there, they weren't o pen for breakfast. A diner that doesn't serve breakfast you ask? Apparently, they have a hard time kee ping a good breakfast cook. Perhaps if you know somebody that needs a job...-- review by Rosie
