A sneak peak at new research our group is engaging in, soon to be a journal article. Ben Coy has worked out the following animation:

"The above animation shows a projection of the periodically driven Van Der Pol oscillator. Changes from chaotic behaviour to peridoic orbits occur as the control parameter, A, is varied. Motivation for investigating this range of control parameter came from looking at the averaged angular momentum intgeral for the strange attractor."

"This plot is shown below along with the dominant Lyapunov exponent. When the largest Lyapunov exponent is positive a strange attractor exists and for control paramters where it is zero we have limit cycles. The value of the angular momentum integral appears to have a certain symmetry under A → -A. However this symmetry is broken near A=-0.8."
